Jill Scott is the only child of mother Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the 4th of April, 1972. The family of Jill Scott consisted of her maternal grandparents and mother. She is an only-child. Scott was a student at her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls After graduating, she was accepted into Temple University. Scott was a student in secondary school and also worked at two other job. She hoped to become a teacher of English in a secondary school. She had a dream of becoming a high-school English teacher, ended when she dropped out of high school. A poet by trade, she began performing in poetry performances live. Later, she joined forces along with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to form the group. They wrote You Got Me together. Then, during Roots performance she came out as an artist. After that, she began collaborating with musicians like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. In the Canada tour for the Broadway musical Rent, she gained valuable experience performing. She was the very first artist to sign by Hidden Beach Recordings.
